What Is Personal Development?

Personal development involves improving one’s quality of life through healthy habits, defining aspirations, and living with purpose. It is a lifelong process that will look different to everyone. For some, it may be to improve physical health. For some, it may be to improve their mindset and develop confidence. For others, it may be to improve their relationships. As one goes through different stages of life, the areas of personal development will also change and evolve. 

Essentially, personal development is living with intention. It is taking small steps towards a bigger goal; consciously paving the path one wants to live. One needs to take actions such as engaging in a consistent morning routine, exercising daily, taking lessons, hiring a coach, reading books, or utilizing any other tool or behaviour to improve oneself.

Often, personal development is triggered by a change or transition period in one’s life, either negative or positive. This could be changing careers, moving to a new city, a breakup, wanting to lose weight, losing a loved one, becoming a mom, or simply the start of a new year.

Recognizing this is key, and prioritizing self care and developing healthy habits is the start.

Without meaning, purpose, or direction in life, it is easy to feel depressed, anxious, and apathetic. When you are dedicated to personal development, you learn to identify and regulate their emotions more effectively, recognize your patterns, become aware of negative thoughts, and find ways to cope and feel overwhelmed.

Personal development improves relationships

When you invest in personal development, you recognize how important meaningful relationships are to your overall well-being. Intentionally investing in positive relationships as well as letting go of relationships that are no longer serving you will lead to a more fulfilling and peaceful life.

When you invest in self-improvement, you evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and discover what you are meant to be doing. You intentionally take steps toward a career that is fulfilling for you and one where you will naturally thrive, rather than meeting resistance on a path that is not meant for you.
