What is a Good Morning Routine?

A good morning routine checklist is a set of ideas, motions, activities, or habits you do every morning. These habits help to give your day some structure and affect how your day turns out. These routines can either bring structure or chaos to your everyday life. For example, a chaos-driven morning routine can include:

  • Waking up
  • Scrolling through social media notifications
  • Rushing to get ready for work

Or a structure-driven routine can include:

  •       Waking up
  •       Meditating
  •       Reading

The above all represent morning routines, but one is less productive than the other. Without a set routine with proper structure, you get distracted, mess up your morning, and spend the rest of the day feeling rushed and disorganized.

A great morning routine allows you to do what you love and sets the tone for a productive day. Before you create a morning routine, identify your keystone habit or anchor.

The keystone is a habit you do each day without fail and provides a foundation for other new habits. It could be something as simple as doing a cardio workout or drinking water. You should also identify your chaining habits, which will make adding more morning habits to your routine easier. The added or chained habits must serve a purpose and add value to your day. For example, you can add journaling after meditating for some time.

Here are some healthy habits to add to your routine to kickstart a productive morning.

Rise early

Most high achievers are morning persons who wake up to execute their morning routines while the world sleeps. For some, waking up early does not come naturally, and they trained themselves until it became a habit. As a night owl, you can also become a morning person by training your body and mind.

Waking up early has numerous benefits, such as an energized brain, meaning more creativity and productivity. When you wake up, leave bed immediately and avoid the snooze button to avoid wasting time. To make it easier, ensure you set your alarm clock a distance from your bed. This will force you to leave your bed to switch it off.

Go through your to-do list

Make a to-do list the previous night and review it the next day. This helps to boost your morning inspiration. Adjust if anything has changed, and then start following the list, starting from the most important task to the least.

Hydrate

Drink water after you wake up to improve bodily functions. Water in the morning protects you from dehydration, dark eye circles, headaches, and fatigue. It can also boost your metabolism, improve energy, and help to flush out toxins.

You can have a cup of coffee

Staying hydrated is important, but enjoying your routine is critical to making it stick. If you are a morning coffee person, you can jump start your day with a cup of coffee, but only after you hydrate since coffee can dehydrate you.

Clear your head

Most successful people include meditation in their morning routines. Meditation is an ancient technique that involves training your mind to focus and learning to redirect your thoughts.

Meditation has numerous benefits, such as controlling stress and anxiety. Meditation clears your head and improves your concentration and mental clarity. People also use various meditation forms to develop a positive mindset, healthy sleeping patterns, and self-discipline.

Journal

Journaling is a great way to declutter your mind and put your thoughts on paper. Writing down your thoughts helps you gain mental clarity and focus on what’s important. Doing it in the morning frees up space in your mind for the day ahead.

Journaling can also help you align with your goals and intentions. Writing your intentions down helps bring focus to those goals. This practice can help you stay organized, reduce stress, and improve your well-being.

Self-care

Self-care is a routine that supports your happiness and well-being. It can be anything from a grooming routine to relaxation activities. Choose things that make your body and mind feel good. Here are some ideas:

  • Take a hot shower or bath.
  • Do a skincare routine.
  • Listen to a podcast.
  • Read a book you enjoy.

Recite affirmations

Affirmations are positive and encouraging statements that help you reframe your thoughts and overcome negative self-talk. Practice gratitude as you recite your positive affirmations and set out to tackle the day.

Eat a healthy breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast improves your energy levels, mood, and performance for the rest of your day. Avoid sugary foods like sweet bread and eat foods like:

  • Healthy fats like nut butter, avocado, or flax seeds.
  • Lean proteins like Greek yogurt, eggs, and tofu
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Complex carbs like whole grain toast and oatmeal

This nutrient-dense breakfast will leave you fuller and give you energy throughout the day.

Have a cold shower

A cold shower helps to improve your blood circulation and wake you up. Cold water also helps improve your immunity and heart rate.

Break a sweat

Research shows that people who exercise daily may have a positive outlook and more energy than people who don’t. Exercise gets rid of brain fog and improves your decision-making skills. Exercising in the morning releases endorphins and improves blood flow. You don’t need to do heavy workouts, and a brisk walk in the fresh air, stretching, and a ten-minute workout are great options.

Benefits of a Morning Routine

A morning routine or having things to do in the morning has numerous science-backed benefits.

Prepares you for the rest of the day

How you spend your mornings determines how your days pan out. If you start the morning feeling lazy or rushed, that feeling will stay with you all day. A perfect morning routine gets your mind on track, organizes your day, and sets your mind in a positive frame.

Reduces stress

Having a daily routine reduces stress by organizing your tasks and providing a sense of control. Following a routine allows you to complete tasks without worrying about what task is next or rushing to finish them. Lack of stress protects your physical health by preventing depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, and other illnesses.

Increases your productivity

Establishing a morning routine is a great way to increase productivity. It helps you focus on valuable tasks throughout the day and avoid wasting time. By completing tasks instead of leaving them unfinished, you’ll end the day feeling accomplished and worry-free.

You are in control

When you have numerous tasks to complete, it can feel like you’re rushing from one to the next without any control. Your day starts to control you instead of the other way around. However, a morning routine can help you regain control of your daily schedule. When you are in control, you have an excellent work-life balance, finish work on time, and have enough time for personal activities.

Improves your confidence

Being calm and managing time well boosts confidence. Taking time for personal care in the morning also improves self-confidence, allowing you to dress up in clothes that make you feel good.

Teaches you flexibility

Your morning routine is essential, but unexpected events may require adjustments. While sticking to a routine is great, learning to be flexible helps you adapt to other areas of life.

Boosts memory

Establishing a consistent routine can help fight forgetfulness. Doing things in the same order daily makes you less likely to forget something important. This includes preparing for work, completing chores, and remembering the most important tasks. A set routine prevents the frustration of forgetfulness.

Improves your sleep quality

A consistent sleep schedule can improve sleep quality. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps regulate and improve your sleep patterns, thus enhancing your mental sharpness during the day.
