The History Behind Manifesting

Manifestation has been a buzzword for a while, and it was made more famous by the movie and book The Secret. Manifesting means making your desires, goals, and dreams come true by believing you can. The idea is that belief, plus focusing your energy and thoughts on your desires, can make them come true. This is not just a theory but a concept that has been proven time and again by countless individuals.

The concept of manifestation is centuries old, and numerous manifestation techniques sprung up from it. However, the basic principle is similar to the Law of Attraction (LOA). The LOA states that our thoughts are magnetic and attract whatever we think. Negative thoughts attract negative negativity, while positive thoughts attract positivity. Manifestation has a long history and can be traced to:

Yoga Nidra

We can trace manifestation roots back to Hinduism, where the Law of Attraction originated. Many modern spiritual practices originate from Hindu customs. The word ‘manifestation’ comes from the Sanskrit word’ manifest,’ which means ‘to show.’ The practice we engage in today is a Westernized version of Yoga Nidra, also known as the yoga of sleep.

Yoga Nidra is similar to manifestation in many ways. It focuses on relaxation and reaching a deep consciousness, whereby you envision your desired outcome while being aware of the power you exude to the Universe.

New Thought

New or Higher thought is a movement that developed in the United States in the 19th century. The movement picked and combined ancient teachings from the Romans, ancient Greeks, Taoists, Chinese, Buddhists, and Egyptians.

The New Thought belief is similar to the Law of Attraction in that thoughts can bring corresponding experiences into a person’s life. It suggests that people and their thoughts are pure energy and that similar energy attracts each other, improving health, wealth, and relationships. While this concept lacks scientific evidence, it is also known as pseudoscience.

Common Manifestation Misconceptions

Influencers on social media talk about manifestation and make it seem like it happens overnight without lifting a finger. Here are some common misconceptions about manifestation:

Good vibes are all you need

Manifesting is not magic. Having positive thoughts and a positive mindset do not work miracles. You need to be proactive and work hard towards your goals. Fantasizing with zero action will get you nowhere. Beware of adopting toxic positivity, which involves being unrealistic about the hurdles you will face while pursuing your goals.

The Universe works the way you expect

The Universe does not work the way you expect it to, but it works as it should. Manifestations may sometimes happen unexpectedly. For example, getting laid off may prompt you to apply for other jobs and lead you to better-paying positions.

You have to manifest big things

You don’t need to have big manifestation goals. Start with small steps, be realistic, and you will see positive changes over time. As your manifestation journey progresses, you’ll become more comfortable with bigger goals.

Manifestation Techniques

You can manifest anything you set your mind to using one of the many powerful tools. Here are some of the methods you can use:

Journaling

Manifestation coaches emphasize the importance of journaling for self-awareness and recognizing potential blocks in manifesting. Daily journaling lets you identify whether your limiting beliefs stand in the way of what you want. Journaling also helps you cultivate an abundance mindset.

Scripting is a manifestation method that lets your brain think you have already achieved your goals. Your subconscious mind does not know the difference between real and imagined. Make journal entries in the present tense from your future self and write as if it already happened. Describe your feelings on how you achieved your goals, such as how you landed your dream life or met your soulmate.

Vision boarding

Another tool for manifestation is vision boarding, where you create a visual representation of what you want to attract. A vision board could be a mood board or a virtual folder depicting your desires. Creating a vision board helps to clarify what you want to manifest.

Positive affirmations

Positive affirmations in daily self-care can improve self-esteem and help you manifest your goals. Speak positive statements to yourself every day to boost your confidence. Affirmations teach your brain to believe you are worthy and deserving. For example, if you want a promotion, use affirmations like:

  • I am smart enough to get this promotion
  • I am capable of handling the new job as a manager/supervisor
  • I deserve the promotion

Visualization

Visualization is a powerful technique with numerous success stories. Engage all your senses to create a clear mental picture of your future. This engagement trains you to respond as if you have already achieved your goal of financial abundance or your desire. Visualize your life in vivid detail as it will be when you reach your objective, and feel all the emotions you will experience.

Gratitude

Be grateful for what you have. Gratitude leads to abundance, prosperity, and happiness. When you appreciate what you have, your positive energy attracts abundance. Practicing gratitude raises your vibrational frequency, creating contentment and a positive mindset. It helps you reflect on what you have and makes you ready for more. Make a gratitude list and be grateful for each of those things and the ones that are coming.

Let go

Let go of all your limiting beliefs that make you think yourself unworthy. These beliefs are what we believe about ourselves and our abilities that come from childhood conditioning. These include thoughts about wealth and money. For instance, you may think that abundance and prosperity are for others and can never happen to us, and you may have a poor relationship with money based on these thoughts. Let go of these beliefs via daily positive affirmations.

Trust the process

When you manifest, trust the process, let go, and don’t obsess over the timeline. Anxiety and desperation lower your vibrational frequency, and you attract more negativity in your life.

Love yourself

Self-love drives the manifestation process. You can practice self-love in different ways, such as limiting negative self-talk, eating healthy, exercising, etc. Look for new ways to show yourself compassion and love, which will raise your vibrational frequency.
